The science of morality?
This isn’t really a question so don’t waste your time reading it if you don’t care or you just want points. This is more of me coming to peace with myself, if your interested it might help you too.

I always asked myself what is morality, and eventually I got the answer, it doesn’t have to do with religion or any conflicting terms, it doesn’t have to do with the subjective side that we decide things are immoral. It has to do with the science of our species, humans have survived all of this time in natures unpredictable power. We have developed a conscience which is the greatest of things and the worst of things. As humans we have 3 very important factors selfish desires, species survival, and of course the most confusing our thoughts.

What morality is, is our balancing tool for these 3 factors, If these 3 factors aren’t balanced we will ultimately become depressed. Selfish needs are necessary for personal survival, but unnecessary if our actions negatively crosses over another of our species. So you could say it would be easy to rob someone, but my morality knows that action crosses another of my kind in a negative way.(in a way that I wouldn’t want them to cross me)

This leaves the grey area of morality open, because it can be confusing in the subjective term. People can say anything affects them negatively, but this is where our selfish desire kicks in to the game. It can usually have a good awareness of when something is crossing the line of their selfishness and that’s not our problem morally. So we can’t let others selfish desires inflect on ours…that’s moral as well.

Say it however you want, it doesn’t mean there is a god, it doesn’t mean there isn’t. In fact the question of why is completely irrelevant to this understanding that we have to follow as humans in order to be happy.

It basically comes down to this, believe whatever the hell you want, but don’t ever let your beliefs of why, cause you to cross your moral code in an effort to satisfy your selfish desires.

Selfish desires are so confusing in our materialistic world that we have developed. Because it obviously doesn’t seem like humanity is having to much trouble surviving as a species right now. So this is the first step for our selfish desire to try to rationalize around the society desire. Basically depressing emotions is our body’s way of getting our attention that the balance is not being met.

It fascinates me that as humans we do have this ability for surviving, both needs are completely necessary, we have to survive as a society, and we have to survive individually. these are both craves that will never be satisfied you’ll never help society as much as you wish you could, and you’ll never help yourself as much as think you can. So where is happiness? right in the middle, both of those have to be unsatisfiable craves in order for the mechanics to work. Emotions are awesome because they help us discern that we may have played a mind trick to throw factors out of balance. If we aren’t happy it’s because we are subconsciously doing something in our actions we take in life that is negatively affecting another human being.

My emotions fascinate me as they brought me to this realization, I’m fascinated with emotions because of their complexity of awareness in life. To me it honestly suggests that there may be god, it’s not rel event in our situation of living.

If you want to be happy and I mean really happy, stop playing games with yourself, understand that keeping the balance maintained to the best of our ability is the key to our personal happiness. Balance is a feeling of harmony that my emotions have made me understand. That whether I like it or not, there is morality in this world. It could suggest that there is a god. Or it could suggest that we have a very high level of intelligence that is communicated to us through our emotions. Either or why is irrelevant to how. Understanding how is the key to balance and NOT understanding why is the key happiness as it leaves the door open for art, imagination, creativity, individuality.

and I could keep fitting so many more examples of why this is true, but if you actually read through all that crap and your interested and maybe confused, just email me or something, and I try to help you make more sense of it…I didn’t say it wasn’t complicated, I’m just pretty dam sure it’s true.

You have understood something which I must that I share with you; there is a principle presented through the whole and, it may not be fully shown or really grasp as if this idea was simply new or like it was only an impression which was left in your head. It’s as if you wrote about ethics and duty to establish one guide line you have seen, but to make a clear comparison of how it seems to me what you have written, it feels like a dream… I do not mean that it wrong, illogical or impossible to realize: I mean that it is like an outline, left uncompleted.

Besides the style, I must come back to what I saying at first. We share a major idea, and, even if you speak of it using an other image, it comes down to the very same thing.

Morality or what is right, what is good, what should be done… Or more simply, good and evil, are not subjective matters and, if there is anything that is better and preferable or some others which are worst, it must be acknowledged that those things are of such nature in their very essence and that, no matter the culture, the time, the circumstances, the people implied, this nature will remain the same.

And, this last line is very important: it says that good and evil are absolute and lies in the acts themselves and are not relative to anything. I see in your lines that this idea of an absolute guide line, an absolute correctness or like you would say "a perfect balance" comes to be obvious.

Of course, you speak of balance and how we should neither be damageable to our own balance, nor to an other’s; and, before you even thought about writing this, I was writing about how far more damageable is the bad action for the one who carries it out…

All the lines I have written about ethics all point at the same idea:

Good is one and you should always prefer to be good. Or, in a more poetic way:
Among the bad men, none are really happy; only the virtuous man is allowed to smile.

Even more fascinating is this:
"So where is happiness? right in the middle"

It’s interesting how I was speaking of accuracy and ethics and spoken of humility, greatness, as being a middle found between exaggeration and underdoing.

I say: Be as great as you can and make others being as great as you can.
You say: Do not be harmful; neither to yourself, nor to others.

Do you ever think depression could come from external factors? The world isn’t paradise, it’s a system in which parasites can thrive. It’s sad, really.
Dude | Feb 05, 2010

Morality is kind of adaption, means respect your environment, and you will feel in harmony in where you at… see placid.

Discipline & the Cold Shower Question redux?
I am treading into uncharted waters here, but after an awful evening of self doubt and relationship/parent stress, and the subsequent internet searching, I am at a loss here. My wife and I have a divergent P.O.V. on something I have done a couple of times in the last six months. We’ve got a VERY spirited 3 year old boy who can be an absolute joy. He’s physical, communicative, creative, and fabulous. Enough so that we both (my wife and I) can hold it together even in the worst of his recent "boundary testing" forays.

Tonight was an example of the perfect storm of mania - we had ‘our’ first dental office cleaning - and despite some crying, it generally went well. made for some fun conversations afterwards too! Then, a trip to his grandma’s - an environment of over-stimulation to say the least, though one he is familiar with. Dinner and post-dinner activities went average, but at bath time he started really acting up/out; throwing things, hitting our ever patient dog, spitting in my face - the full catastrophe.

I was doing well coping - got him undressed and into the bath, but was "cracking". He had been climbing on the edge of the tub and toilet, and after getting him to stop THAT, I got him in the half-filled tub - where he then started going nuts - kicking/splashing water all over the place, talking back - and spitting at me. I turned off the hot water and then pulled up the shower knob - and let the shower spray a quick jolt of cold water at him - then turned it off. He stopped immediately, yelled for a moment, calmed down - was not happy - but the uncomfortable diversion got his attention and I thought *phew* - the worst was averted here. After discussing why I had done it with him, and how his behavior had been not only unacceptable but downright dangerous, we were pretty much over it.

As the tub was only about 1/4 full, I went to turn the water back on to finish filling the tub up, but had forgotten to push the shower lever down (old fashioned ‘knob’ on top of the tub filler spout which now sticks ‘up’ in shower position until you firmly push it down) so we BOTH got sprayed by the cold shower! I immediately stopped it, but he was very upset - and rightfully mad at me, and could not see the humor in the situation (in that I was soaking wet!) at all and was pretty vocal for a minute or two. I talked him down again, apologizing and explaining that it was an accident - but at this point my wife insisted on taking over, noting torture, cruelty, meanness and other comments about how terrible she thought my behavior had been.

I note it here for a little feedback. I NEVER hit my boy, I spend a lot of time with him (unemployed architect for the last year) and am very active in day-to-day parenting. We take swimming and climbing classes, ride bikes, build models, play games/cards, draw, paint, shoot photos, and so on and so on. I have just finished reading both ‘Raising Cain’ and ‘Gender Matters’. I feel like I’m pretty well informed, and that I have a solid sense of right and wrong, but can’t decide on this one and am really stressed and upset thinking about it. I really do not feel it was out of line - compared to yelling at him, or worse - pulling him out of the tub or other physical consequences. But I also know I could have handled it much better - trying another distraction or line of reasoning.

For what it’s worth - I would NEVER take him out of some other scenario and place him under a cold shower! I have seen the long and emotional forum threads about that tactic, and do not condone it. This seemed like as low "impact" a way to snap him out of his devolving tantrum here.

Help!

Leaving aside the second "shot" which was an accident, I think this was one of those things you do that isn’t so bad in the grand scheme of things but also probably isn’t a good tactic to incorporate as a regular thing. A quick squirt of cold water is not the same as a prolonged dousing, I believe you meant it more as an "energy change" than as a punishment.

However, this is a good opportunity for you to think about and plan for occasions like this, so you can be consistent - if the consequences are always "improvised" when he is acting up, he will feel the need to continue testing.

Next time such a situation happens - and there WILL be a next time, I think you’d do well to intervene much earlier in his cycle of winding up - if you are "cracking" then it’s been going on too long, and he can read it in you.

I just started reading "Positive Discipline: The Early Years" and am finding it very helpful.
1and1ontheway | Jan 22, 2010

Given the fact that he was thrashing in the tub, climbing on the sides which is just unsafe, AND the fact that he spat in your face more than once, a blast of cold water was MORE than called for. The second one that also soaked you was just plain funny… and your wife should be apologizing to you AND your son for overreacting.
malwilhist | Jan 22, 2010

I don’t think this was the right thing to do, IMO it was very childish. To me it is the same thing as yelling or spanking. I would rather be yelled at or spanked a few times than have cold water shot at me! I think it is really cruel.
You said he was overstimulated this day before the bath..he does need to have a bath! but if he was "cracking" before the bath his actions should have been expected..right???? so…would it have worked if you distracted him with a calm activity…a game, read a book, watch a little tv, color just for a little while to calm him down before the bath…or wait untill morning for a bath. I always assess my childrens mood before I decide to do something. In this case you most likely could have predicted what was going to happen. If a child is "cracking" nothing will go well unless you can calm them down. Bubbles!!!! Next time you are giving him a bath and he isnt acting so well say, do you want to blow bubbles in the bath? If he sais yes then…ok, put the bubbles on the side of the tub, say, after I wash your body we will blow bubbles. (just so he doesn’t get to do something fun before he calms down/starts acting like a good boy.) Distraction in a case like this really works well.

It sounds like he may have been tired..that never makes for a good situation.

You sound like a good Dad, very involved but…I agree with your wife! I would have stepped also, and turned the hot water OFF the next time my hubby was in the shower…would you like that?
honey | Jan 22, 2010

I’m pretty sure you and/or your wife are going to have a heart attack sometime before you’re forty if you keep living life like this. Take a deep breath (and maybe tell your wife to take a walk) and just relax. Kids are intensely resilient, you’ve done no permanent damage except that you’re wife intervening was the worst thing she could have done. If she wanted to discuss why she felt what you did was wrong that is fine but not in front of the child. By showing you that amount of disrespect in front of him she has basically given him permission to continue to be disrespectful to you as well, which is not okay.

If I were you, and at the second (accidental) showering I would have said a loud oopsie! and continued on with what I was doing. Your son has got to learn some coping skills, and his mommy rescuing him every time something upsets him is disastrous for his mental health.
Kelly | Jan 22, 2010

A quick burst of cold water is not going to hurt him, and sometimes it’s just what a person needs to stop what they’re doing. (Similar to people in the movies who slap a hysterical person to get their attention).
I don’t see anything wrong with one quick burst of cold water, I’m assuming that afterwards, he took a warm bath and was fine.
As long as you explained to him why his behavior was unacceptable, you didn’t do anything wrong. I don’t agree with people who say that you should have distracted him, because that’s not addressing the wrong behavior, it’s pretending that it doesn’t exist, and not showing the child that what they were doing is wrong. (Which can lead to major problems!)

you could go into gamestop and look at all the prices for those things add them all together and divide them by three and that would be a rough estimate they told me they usually pay one third of the origion al price

I Wonder What A Poem Would Dream — opinions?
Silently sleeping
like a human it’s heaving
breathing deeply as the words
glimmer and dim
A world of the beyond holds another
where sounds are color
and color is a sense
What’s loud is yellow
and what’s blue is soft
All together creating splashing spots
painting the rough, wet and dry

Glass ships sailing on snow
with numbers as those keeping it afloat
Nine stands at the edge
with a sword in it’s grip
pointing it forward
and yelping orders
Stay on course and don’t let anyone rip!!

The atmosphere leaves space for a moon and a sun
who dance alone all through the day
only to merge during twilight
and stay as one
while droplets of water and flames of a fire
kiss

Tides in the earth rise up to the sky
and clouds ride them while forming shapes of
birds or mammals
or weird figurines
with two heads of a dog
and feet as horns

What could my poem be dreaming?
Could it be dreaming about me?
Silly old me writing the piece
or walking to school
or drowsing in space?
Would a love poem crave love
or hate out of spite?
Would a political poem dream of a world
where everything is set right?
Would poems about oceans
dream of land?
Where does the earth or the human stand
in the mind of a word?

I wonder what a poem would dream
but for now
I’ll just appreciate how it removes me
from the real

i really like this, you should think about getting this published, your imagination is immense- and the ending paragraph really sums it up well! you’ve done really well, looks like you’ve spent alot of time- well done!

Baader Meinhof Complex, The
Baader Meinhof Complex, The (2008)

IMDB rating: 7.40

Plot: Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he’s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

Finding a location in Berlin?
Hi

Is anybody Local to Berlin; or knows Berlin very well? I am travelling there in a few weeks and need to track a location down.

Ive seen the film "The Baader Meinhof Complex" and would like to see Ulrike Mienhof’s gravestone.
Ive been on Google Maps and tracked the location to:

Heilig-Kreuz-Kirchhof, Mariendorf,
Cemetery, which I believe is North of Tegel Airport.
Ive found U-Bhan stations around the area although they look a distance away. Does anybody know if the cemetery is in realistic walking distance; and how long it would take to walk from the nearest U-Bhan Station?

Also is the cemetery large; is her grave easy to locate. Ive tracked down its in "Zone A"? Does anybody know where that is in the cemetery?

Any help would be much appreciated

In reality Ulrike Meinhof is burried in the city of Stuttgart not in Berlin so you won’t find her gravestone there.
The burial was very controvers at the time the major of Stuttgart defended the right of the terrorists to get a burial place and said that with the dead even terrorists aren’t to be considered as public ennemies anymore

If you like matrix, watch "the 13th Floor" or "Dark city"
If you like Serenity, see the TV series Firefly. It’s better in my opinion.
